When shooting a nude portraits one must always hold the following in mind - they are, first of all, art. However bold they may appear, the chief goal of a good nude portrait is to evoke thoughts and deliver spiritual pleasure. Let us turn away from ethereal and boring theory, though, and get down to practice!
I have prepared 7 must-read tips & tricks for you to use and build up proficiency in matters of nude Glamour Images - as well as motivate yourself properly.
- Remember - you want your nude photos to be aesthetically shot and artistic, not vulgar and trivial. The main goal is not to expose nudity but to reveal the sensual and artistic beauty of the human body - ergo, focus on depicting shapes and texture. Avoid showing too intimate details e.g. genitals if you don’t know how to make them look beautiful rather than embarrassing. Let your sense of taste take flight – if you’ve got one (and you must have, otherwise why in the world would you take interest in glamour photography), nothing can go wrong;
- Unless you’re shooting a naked pirate, don’t succumb to the temptation of dressing up your model in pricely tokens: nude photography is about a human body, not jewelry and fancy trinkets. To create an impression of glamour and elegance, you only need something pretty and sophisticated to complement the composition - but not to draw the viewer’s attention away from your model;
- For practical purposes one should always avoid using so-called “hot lights” in a studio. At all times, cold lights are more appropriate - for the sake of saving electric power, not sweating like a pig and having more space for creativity. In order to acquire more subtle light, use soft-boxes. Actually, always try to make light as soft as possible – it creates a proper mood;
- Don’t let the laws of optics stand in your way to creating a nude masterpiece: the shooting angle can alter the proportions and make your model either too tall and thin or too short. I guess neither is acceptable, is it?
- Get inspired. Experimenting with poses, light and surroundings can result in very unexpected and original variations;
- Shoot, shoot, shoot and did I mention shoot? I mean it - to call your session successful, you need lots of material to look through. Even hardcore glamour photographers make some several thousand pictures in one studio session – so they could later pick really astounding images;
- Establish a connection with your model. She is not just an element within the frame – she is your vital partner and your very best friend when it concerns working in a studio. Your model is the second most important person behind the creative activity - if not the first. If your model feels uncomfortable, you won’t get anywhere – even if you’re Helmut Newton!
It’s never a piece of cake to be a nude portraitist, nor is to shoot Glamour Photography. However, anything is doable if you don’t give up. As they say, with one step you can start a trip of thousand miles! We, fellow-photographers, can do it with a single flash.
